Inhalt:
Philosophical Reflections on illness, suffering, death and dyingAlthough the technical abilities to master the illnesses and disabilities in our lives are still rapidly growing and developing, as long as the human condition will be subjected to illness, suffering, disabilities, death and the fear of dying, the importance of caring will remain to be just as important as the more technical ‘curing’; and having a philosophy of life will be just as important as having a good health insurance.
Especially for social workers it is of the utmost importance to be equipped with ways of thinking and to have the competence of speaking about these unnegotiable, confrontational and most of the time irreparable facts of life. But suffering, death and dying are not only highly individual experiences and the task of social workers is always embedded in a societal and political context.
In this course we will study philosophical ways of dealing with these ‘boundary-experiences’. We will study concepts and phenomena such as ‘palliative care’, illness narratives, the concept of human dignity, disability studies and the renewed philosophical interest in philosophy as a way of life.
