Who Owns the City? Cultural Approaches to Public Places and City Activism

Inhalt:
This course introduces students to the analysis of the city on the basis of its public spaces, here understood as 'commons'. We will critically engage with the city as collective project and try to find out the dangers and limitations connected to the on-going privatization and commercialization of what used to be public.We will find ut what gentrification and segregation are and what they do to certain districts in the city. In particular, we will tackle the double role that artists might have in these processes and how culture can be mobilized in various ways within city politics.
Our main main will be to understand the city both in its spatial and social dimension and see how activism and a critical eye can enforce us as citizen.
The main case study will be Düsseldorf, but comparative studies about other cities in Germany and around the world are welcome.
Empfehlungen zu speziellen Kenntnissen und Bereitschaften:
The students should be able to understand, read and interact in English. Students of all levels of English are welcome, this course might be useful also in developing your English communication skills!Arbeitsformen:
During the course, the students will write a brief diary entry (1-2 pages), write a field note and record a soundscape/take pictures for some in-class exercises and group works. The final assignment will be the production of an essay, a documentary or a podcast, studying and evaluating a real ongoingproject in Düsseldorf (or another city of choice).
The course is interdisciplinary in scope, covering methods, perspectives and theories related to
social research, social policy, cultural studies and urban studies.
It is taught in English.
Prüfungsleistungen bzw. Testat:
Gruppenarbeit (mit Vorstellung/Referat oder Poster) + Hausarbeit in deutscher oder englischer Sprachevon 7-10 Seiten.
