Inhalt:
This course will introduce students to musical urbanism. We will uncover the relation between popular music as a cultural practice and as a scene, and the city as a spatial, economic and social space.In particular, we will discuss the role played by music in shaping contemporary neo-liberal cities and their 24-hour economy and the way gentrification and real estate are influenced by musical expressions. In addition, we will discuss the current emphasis put by urban consultancies and think tanks on the concept of ‘music city’. We will try to untangle its meaning for cultural policies and regulations and the exportability of this concept. We will also deal with temporary uses and experimental planning in connection to music festivals. We will also use music to understand urban injustice, the right to the city, segregation and urban resistance.
The course will be based on lectures and workshops about various urban centres such as London, New York City and Berlin and music expressions such as punk, techno and hip-hop. Musical explorations of Düsseldorf will also be part of the course, with the adoption of various ethnographic methods.

The students should be able to understand, read and interact in English as second language (of course native speakers are also welcome!)Arbeitsformen:
During the course, the students will write a brief diary entry (1-2 pages), write a field note and record a soundscape/take pictures for some in class exercises and group works. The final assignment will be the production of an essay, a documentary or a podcast, studying and evaluating a real ongoingproject in Düsseldorf (or another city of choice).
The course is interdisciplinary in scope, covering methods, perspectives and theories related to
urban studies, cultural studies, sociology, social sciences and geography.
It is taught in English and relates to different areas of Europe.
Prüfungsleistungen bzw. Testat:
Gruppenarbeit (mit Vorstellung/Referat oder Poster) + Hausarbeit in deutscher oder englischer Sprachevon 7-10 Seiten.
