Inhalt:

Why do we party in Barcelona and look for heavy metal bands in Helsinki? Why do we go clubbing in Berlin and to museums in Florence? This course examines the role that culture played in defining different European cities from 19th to 21st century. How does culture shape / mediate the perception of certain cities through texts, sounds and images? We will also analyze the cultural environments (‘scenes') that produced these images and will question their role in the construction of certain reputations.
The main aim of this course is to understand the role of culture in the urban environment. This will inevitably link the work of punk bands to that of architects, city officials to hipsters, and urban planners to urban poets.
The course is interdisciplinary in scope, covering methods, perspectives and theories related to comparative literature, media studies, musicology, cultural studies, cultural geography and urban studies. The course will explore how design influences urban culture and the life of city inhabitants.

Empfehlungen zu speziellen Kenntnissen und Bereitschaften:

The course will be held in English. Students will be able to develop a critical insight into the development of contemporary urban life and are encouraged to adopt the taught methodologies critically and to use them to examine their own local environments.

Arbeitsformen:

There are going to be lectures, workshops, group works and some ethnographic assignments (such as notes and participant observation)

Prüfungsleistungen bzw. Testat:

Gruppenarbeit (mit Vorstellung/Referat oder Poster) + Hausarbeit in deutscher oder englischer Sprache
