Inhalt:
This course might be of interest for those students who would like to work in international development cooperation on the ground/in the field/abroad, especially in countries of the Global South.Learning Objectives/Goal of the Course:
After taking the course, you should be able to:
+ Understand the potentials and value of community development to modern society.
+ Examine the many ways in which community development is contested and challenged by political critiques and practical circumstances.
The course is divided in two parts:
* The first parts will be about Community Development (definition, theories, debates, methods, challenges, ethics).
* The second part will be about a specific approach for working with communities, mainly participatory approaches to development (models, debates, challenges, ethics).
The course takes a critical approach to community development and participation encouraging the students to look at the pros and cons of these models of work in development cooperation.

Arbeitsformen:
During the seminar: group work, case studies, exchanges/discussions.A visit to a German organisation specialised in community development work in the Global South with a presentation and Q&A
Prüfungsleistungen bzw. Testat:
Students are expected to present a Term Paper of 10 pages (plus literature and annexes) in the English language.The paper should be an analysis of a community development case which should include:
1. a context analysis (what model of CD is being implemented? radical? pluralist? or communitarian? or all of them?)
2. a short general power analysis
3. an overview of participatory approaches in the project, if present.
The paper can be presented individually or in a group.
The deadline for the presentation of the paper is 26 July 2019 (26.07.2019).
